Inner West Magpies Australian Football Club are excited to announce our coaches, captains and leadership group for the Women’s squad for the 2020 Season.

Arron (Catta) Convery will continue as the head coach for the third year at the club. Catta has been a strong advocate to develop pathways for the junior girls into senior football and the club has been moving up the ladder every year under his tutelage.

John Parker joins the club as the assistant and backline coach. John comes with a wealth of experience in women’s football having previously coached the first grade women’s side at the Newcastle City Blues and the under 18’s side for the Tindal Magpies in Northern Territory.

Christien Specha is an Inner West Magpies junior who has been involved with the women’s team for the past 4 years. He has played over 150 games and will be the mid line coach for this season. He will also be coaching our inaugural Division 2 women’s team this year and brings a wealth of skills and knowledge.

Rebecca Privitelli (Priv) is an AFLW Giant’s player recruited from Eastern Devils (VFLW). She has grown up with AFL in her blood and has been playing footy since she was a child in Victoria. Having played in the AFLW with Carlton (2017), Giants (2018 and 2020). Priv is relishing the opportunity to be able to coach the forward line for the 2020 season and to also to help develop the Magpies juniors. This provides valuable experience in help them achieve their dream of playing in the AFLW competition one day.

Co-Captains for the 2020 season will be Melissa Freckelton (Frecks) and Mai Nguyen. Frecks is the heart and soul of the women’s side, playing over 100 games for the Magpies since 2011 and was awarded her seventh best & fairest for the club last season. Mai Nguyen is a former AFLW player for the Giants and feels refreshed after having a break from playing since the end of the 2017 season. Frecks & Mai are looking forward to the challenge of taking the Magpies into the 2020 season & helping to develop the junior girls in their pathway system.

The leadership group will be Tracy Rantall (Ace), Michaela Ekman (Mickey) Laura Marshall and Jasmine Smith. Ace is from Victoria and has been playing at the Magpies since 2017 and is a hard in and under player. Mickey isn’t just a cornerstone of the women’s team but has played since the introduction of AFL to Sydney football playing since the inaugural season in 2000. Laura Marshall has come through our juniors program and is developing into a leader on and off the field, playing over 50 games for the club. Jasmine Smith is currently a part of the Giants AFLW train on side and the Magpies are extremely excited with the experience and knowledge she will bring into the side.
